The elementary grades of fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are always fun years to teach. The students are not only increasing their basic knowledge but they also are beginning to learn how to apply their basic skills to solving problems in math, science and geography as well as expanding their writing skills to make their different writing projects more interesting to read.
I daily instruct in Bible, math, literature, and writing/grammar. Geography, keyboarding skills, and science share an instructional time during the week.
I use paper, pencil, and real books because students learn better with these materials.
Bible instruction is covered on the bottom half of the previous page, How It Works, in detail.
Saxon Math has been an amazing support in my teaching of math in the grades of third through twelfth, regular education and special education for the over twenty-five years. Students are placed in the book that best fits a student's skills after I review their Saxon placement test.
I place large emphasis on knowing basic skills at the beginning. It makes a big, big difference in the long and short term.
The literature I use for the students to read is written within a Christian world view but not always written by Christian authors. Respect for authority, hard work, parents are not fools, putting others first (eventually), fiction and biographies.
Writing is taught using the "The Ihms Method of Writing Really Well". The method has produced confident writers for over 25 years. The method works in teaching students how to spell, correct their own writing, and a system for making their writings unique. An important aspect of the student's writing involves writing for live audiences -friendly letters and writing contests.
Easy Grammar is an excellent supporting curriculum that helps my students learn the parts of speech and with the Writing Really Well writing system, apply those skills in their writing projects.
Science in a Nutshell is used as the science curriculum for elementary. I strongly believe science in the lower grades should be 70% hands-on and 30% information. Not a Christian curriculum. There is nothing in the experiments we use that is anti-Christian either. Science at New Park Street is used to assist our students in their understanding of His creation. As I am write this, the same could be said for all of our subjects.
Ultrakey Keyboard Program is the one internet program the students will be using. The Ultrakey has a lot of advantages over the rest of its competition. For one, from the beginning, it trains students in the correct posture, hand placement and in individual finger training. It also allows me to individualize each students progress. And it is compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. The skill is very important for typing final projects, using Word , and Excel.
G-QUEST is the in-house geography curriculum used at New Park Street Christian Academy. Students learn about world and Arizona geography though the use of maps, almanacs and games.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
